Interfacial Morphology and Bonding Mechanism of Explosive Weld Joints

Abstract Interfacial structure greatly affects the mechanical properties of laminated plates. However, critical material that impact interfacial morphology, appearance, and associated bonding mechanism explosive welded plates are still unknown. In this paper, same base plate (AZ31B alloy) different flyer metals (aluminum alloy, copper, stainless steel) were used to investigate morphology structure. SEM TEM results showed typical sine wave, wave-like, half-wave-like interfaces found at Al/Mg, Cu/Mg SS/Mg clad plates, respectively. The morphologies mainly due differences in hardness yield strength between metals. microstructural distribution interface indicated metallurgical bonding, instead commonly believed solid-state plate. addition, shear can reach up 201.2 MPa, 147.8 128.4 proposed research provides design basis for composite metal fabrication by welding technology.
